July is ‘Let’s Talk’ Month: Why Conversations Matter

At Skin Shield Scrubs, we know that care isn’t just about medical treatments, it’s about emotional support, human connection, and being there for one another. And in the spirit of connection, we’re proud to recognise July as ‘Talk to Us’ Month, a vital initiative led by the Samaritans to encourage open conversations around mental health and emotional wellbeing.

As a community rooted in healthcare, we understand how much our daily environments can impact our mental and emotional state.  In our daily roles, we continuously support others through touch and kindness, but it’s just as important to remember that your own emotional wellbeing matters too.  And so does having the space, and the encouragement to talk.

What is ‘Talk to Us’ Month?

‘Talk to Us’ Month is an annual campaign spearheaded by Samaritans, the charity that offers a safe space for anyone struggling to cope. Throughout July, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of listening and being heard, reminding all of us that you don’t need to face difficult times alone.

This month isn’t just about picking up the phone when things get tough (though that can help!). It’s also about everyday conversations. The casual catchups over coffee. The chats in break rooms. The texts that simply say, “Hey, how are you really?” These moments might seem small, but they have the power to make a big difference, especially when you’re the one offering a listening ear at the right moment.

Why Talking Matters

We live in a world where it’s easy to put on a brave face. Especially in professions where others rely on us to stay strong, show up, and keep smiling. But constantly carrying that emotional load without an outlet can take a toll – sometimes quietly, invisibly.

Talking can be a release. It helps us process thoughts, share burdens, and feel less alone. Even a simple conversation can shift someone’s day or even save a life.

It’s also important to remember that talking isn’t just for those in crisis. It’s for everyone. Mental health exists for everyone but at different levels and at different times of our lives, we all benefit from regular, open-hearted conversations. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or just a little off, talking can help bring clarity, comfort, and connection.

Let’s Normalise the Chat

At Skin Shield Scrubs, we believe that emotional wellbeing should be as much a priority as physical safety. That’s why we’re encouraging our community to take ‘Talk to Us’ Month to heart, and to use it as a reminder to check in with yourself and those around you.

Maybe that means:

  • Asking a colleague how they’re really doing – and sticking around for the answer.
  • Being honest if you’re having a tough day.
  • Offering a listening ear, without judgement or trying to “fix” things.
  • Reaching out for support when you need it.
  • Being present and listening when you know somebody else needs to talk.

We also want to remind you that talking doesn’t always have to mean deep heart-to-hearts. It can start with a laugh, a shared story, or a moment of vulnerability. Connection comes in many forms, and every one of them matters.

Our Promise to You

We designed Skin Shield Scrubs to support the people who spend their days supporting others. But we also know that true care goes beyond clothing, it’s in how we treat each other, how we listen, and how we make space for real conversations.

So, this July, let’s all commit to talking more – and listening better. Let’s be a workplace, a community, and a society where no one has to struggle in silence.

Because sometimes, the best thing you can wear is not just a great set of scrubs – but a listening ear and an open heart.

You’re never alone. Let’s talk.
